Renesting
|
| |
If you are going to try renesting
(the best thing to do with a healthy bird),
let the bird rest quietly in the warming box
while you locate the nest, repair a fallen nest,
or prepare a substitute nest.
|
|
| |
Nests that have fallen can be
"reassembled" in a sieve, a large
funnel, a wicker breadbasket, a hanging flowerpot,
or some other container that has excellent drainage.
We do not recommend punching holes in a margarine
tub, as the drainage is poor. |
|
| |
To construct a new nest, use one
of the above containers and add dried
leaves (crushed if they are large), dried grass,
and other dried natural materials in layers,
shaping it into a "bowl" with your
fist, then line it with soft natural materials
such as pet hair. Do not use paper towels, tissue,
cloth, or any material that will absorb water.
See Sample Below...
The repaired nest or substitute nest should
be placed 8-10 feet off the ground, as close
as possible to the location of the original
nest (if known). It should be securely attached,
and located so that the branches above it
provide an "umbrella" of leaves
to protect the bird from sun and rain
